In the southwestern area of Chania, you will find the magnificent Samaria Gorge. It was designated as a National Park in 1962 and is now a world biosphere reserve.
The 16 km gorge is one of the longest gorges in Europe and a walk through it will be unforgettable. With its high cliffs and narrow passages, it is a place of rare, raw beauty. Some of the trees in the gorge are over a thousand years old and have witnessed some incredible events in Cretan history.
Hikes in the gorge usually start at an altitude of 1,230 m, south of the village of Omalos, ending next to the sea, at Agia Roumeli in the Libyan Sea. It is a steady downhill route and is one of the most beautiful landscapes you can find anywhere in Greece.
In April and May, the valley is alive with wildflowers and you may even spot endangered Kri-Kri jumping on the rocks. You’ll walk through cool streams and cross a desert settlement, the village of Samaria. The gorge is open to walkers from May to October.
It takes an average of four to six hours to cross it. Along the way you can take time to enjoy the stunning scenery.
